    RECOMMENDED ROUTES

Pick a route and start exploring.

Three ways to explore, from a week in the south to a longer peninsula road trip. Open a route to see the stops. Suggested lengths include your return to San José del Cabo.

The colored lines connect the main stops schematically; they are not driving directions. All trips return to Los Cabos. Select a route to see it clearly.

    SOUTH BAJA ROUTE

Sea of Cortez, surf towns, beaches and desert roads.

Los Cabos · East Cape · Cabo Pulmo · La Ventana · La Paz / Isla Espíritu Santo · Todos Santos · Cerritos · Cabo San Lucas / El Arco

A great first Baja road trip: clear-water beaches, small towns, surf stops, desert scenery and some of our favorite places along the way.

0216–20 days · Coast & seasonal whalesSea of Cortez & whale countryThe southern loop, plus Loreto · Bahía Concepción · Mulegé · Bahía Magdalena

Keep the South Baja stops and give yourself more time along the Sea of Cortez, with a Pacific-coast detour for seasonal whale watching.

San José del Cabo → Santiago / Cabo Pulmo → La Ventana → La Paz → Loreto → Bahía Concepción → Mulegé → Bahía Magdalena → Todos Santos / Cerritos → Cabo San Lucas → San José del Cabo.

The southern favorites: keep Cabo Pulmo, La Ventana and La Paz, with optional trips to Espíritu Santo, Sol de Mayo and Sierra de la Laguna.
Loreto: leave time for town and an optional boat trip in Loreto Bay. Blue-whale excursions are a seasonal option.
Bahía Concepción: slow down around Santispac, El Coyote and El Requesón. Choose established places to stay and check access before turning off the highway.
Mulegé: spend time around the oasis town before starting south again.
Bahía Magdalena: on the return, detour to Puerto San Carlos or Adolfo López Mateos for a gray-whale excursion in season.
The Pacific finish: return through Todos Santos and Cerritos, with an optional El Arco boat trip before the handover in San José del Cabo.

Make room for the drive: spread the southbound journey over several days. Around 16 days means choosing your optional stops; closer to 20 gives you more beach time.

Whales are seasonal. Winter into early spring is the usual planning window, but local operating dates vary. Check authorized tours for your dates; sightings and departures depend on wildlife, weather and sea conditions. Boat trips are booked separately, and the camper stays on land.

0324–30 days · The longer road tripBahía de los Ángeles & the desert beyondContinue north through San Ignacio · Guerrero Negro · Bahía de los Ángeles · Cataviña

Build on the Sea of Cortez route and continue into central Baja. This is a round trip from San José del Cabo, with several travel days reserved for the return.

South Baja stops → Loreto → Bahía Concepción / Mulegé → Santa Rosalía → San Ignacio → Guerrero Negro → Bahía de los Ángeles → Cataviña → return south via Highway 1 → Bahía Magdalena → Todos Santos / Cerritos → Los Cabos.

Santa Rosalía and San Ignacio: break up the journey with a town stop and time around San Ignacio’s oasis and mission.
Whale lagoons: choose a seasonal excursion at San Ignacio Lagoon or Ojo de Liebre near Guerrero Negro. Agree on suitable road access or an operator transfer before heading to a lagoon.
Bahía de los Ángeles: turn east toward the Sea of Cortez for bay views and optional boat outings. Stay a few nights before returning to Highway 1.
Cataviña: continue north into granite boulders, cardón cacti and the Valle de los Cirios landscape. Explore on foot from suitable access points; this is the northern turnaround.
The journey back: retrace Highway 1 in stages, revisiting the coast or choosing stops you skipped on the way north.
Finish in the south: add Bahía Magdalena if the season fits, then Todos Santos, Cerritos and Los Cabos. The southern route’s island and hiking stops remain optional.

Plan for 24–30 days: this is a suggested pace, not a fixed itinerary. Choose the longer end if you want to keep most southern stops and spend several nights at each northern base.

Plan fuel, water and daylight driving: distances between services grow in the central desert. Confirm supplies and overnight stops before each leg. Use paved roads and maintained, passable dirt roads only; no off-road driving. Whale tours are seasonal, booked separately and subject to conditions.
